Sheepfair Saturday – A great success

The sun shone, the sheep escaped and PC Baldwin had to make an arrest! It was a great first day of the Swinging Sixties Sheepfair!

2016-07-16 10.09.27Thanks to everyone who came along to the Sheepfair yesterday. It was great to see so many people dressed up; our roving judges have been making notes and look forward to see what/who else catches their eye tomorrow!

The day started with the crowds lining the streets for the 10am sheep drove.  It was great fun to see the sheep storm down Winchester Street, all was going well until they spotted an escape route, bolted down the foot path and gathered in the wrong garden on Winchester Street.  Thankfully we just had to get them across the road and into the waiting pen. We also seemed to acquire a few celebrities to help with this!

The official proceedings kicked off thanks to Lady Louisa Portal, Kit Malthouse MP and The Mayor of Basingstoke, Cllr Jane Frankum.  Lady Louisa was dressed in a wonderful Swinging Sixties number.

20160716_163931The crowds were treated to a wide choice of entertainment, of course we had the tradational Oveton Mummers along and Dan the Hat and circus Flambe Circus Theatre were popular in the main arena. Elsewhere local bands and artists entertained us on the community stage and in St Marys Garden (which was jam packed!).

We also saw stilt walkers, giant bubbles and the Red Arrows graced us with their presence.

One of the real surprise moments of the day was the ‘Ban the Bomb’ march from ODS, read more about this here.

The day was rounded of by the traditional Sheepfair parade. We had GP 20160716_161513around 30 vintage cars and bikes followed by various community groups which included Overton Playgroup as The Jungle Boo;, Walking for health; Overton Sings; Fantasia Brides; The Children’s House; Overton Rainbows, Brownies and Guides as The Hungry Caterpillar; Overton Youth Football club who were recreating the England vs Germany teams of 1966; Overton Dramatic Society and St Mary’s Church Space Hoppers club. All led by Old Basing Royal British Legion Corps of Drums band and with a good dose of Morris dancing thrown in. We also had James Bond, astronauts, a pirate and a Pearly Queen!

Don’t forget to visit our facebook or twitter pages for more pics of the day. We hope to make a montage of photos and videos after the event. Please do send us any you have:

We hope you can join us today for another fun packed Sheepfair day.
